Local Area History

Saw Mill in ByngThe Britt and Byng Inlet area was first settled in 1866 when logging operations began on the Magnetewan River. Saw mills and logging operations dominated the area for many years. In the years of the early 1900's, the population of Byng Inlet was nearly 4200, but when timber supplies in the area dwindled, many of the residents moved elsewhere to seek employment. The last mill was torn down in 1928. Evidence of the mills and logging is present on the river. Pilings along the shoreline mark the locations of the mills, and iron rings fastened into rocks on some of the islands were used to tie off rafts of logs.

The Port of Britt was also important to the oil industry as a distribution depot. Large tankers off-loaded fuel into tank farms, then from there into trucks for distribution to the north. The C.N.R. still uses Britt for storage and fuelling its locomotives. Four or five times a year a large tanker will travel from Sarnia to deliver diesel fuel to the tanks located here. Its quite a sight to see a ship nearly 400 feet long navigating it's way up the narrow inlet.

The region now is mostly recreational. The numerous islands and bays offer hideaways for many cottagers and campsites for anglers and tourists. The rugged shoreline of northeastern Georgian Bay is spectacular in its beauty and offers boaters many opportunities for anchoring in secluded areas to swim, dive or just relax in the cool clean water of the Georgian Bay.

George WrightThe Wright family moved into the Britt area in 1930 as commercial fishermen. In 1947, George Wright brought the first diesel powered engine onto the Georgian Bay. Since the highway at the time ended at Britt, tourists, fishermen and hunters would then be 'taxied' to their island camps by Wright's Transfer Service.

old signThe marina, established in 1950, began as a result of the work of George Wright and his wife Elaine. Their son Doug and his wife Doreen became owners and operators in 1971.
In 2000 the third generation of the Wright family, Doreen and Doug's youngest daughter, Karrie, and her husband Graham Lacey entered into the business. Karrie and Graham brought some fresh ideas and plans to build on the solid foundation of good, friendly service, quality workmanship and fair pricing.
